  • Confirmation
    Confirmation
    10th–12th Grade
    • Confirmation Preparation

Confirmation strengthens the grace received at Baptism and calls us into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church through the gift of the Holy Spirit. At St. Edward, Confirmation preparation is designed to help teens freely discern and prepare to receive the Sacrament and to equip them to live their Catholic faith far beyond Confirmation.
    • Registration Process 2026-2027

The registration period for the 2026-2027 sacrament preparation process is now closed.
    • The Confirmation Journey

      • Faith Formation
The first step toward Confirmation is active participation in faith formation (Large Group, Home-Based Formation, or Catholic school) for at least one year before interviewing.
      • Candidate Interview
Teens meet with Youth Ministry to discern their readiness and desire to begin Confirmation preparation.
      • Confirmation Preparation
Candidates continue active faith formation while participating in a dedicated Confirmation Small Group.
      • Confirmation Mass
Candidates celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with their sponsors, families, and the parish community.
      • Confirmation Mystagogy — Stay L.I.T.
Confirmed teens continue meeting to discern their call to Christian service through Leadership Intensive Training.
      • Mission
Confirmation is not graduation. Confirmed teens are sent forth to live their faith through discipleship, service, leadership, and a commitment to lifelong formation.

    Confirmation Kick-Off
    • Confirmation Prep Begins

Kick-Off is an important foundation for the Confirmation year. Candidates meet their peers and small group leaders, begin Chosen, our Confirmation program, spend time in prayer, receive an opportunity for Reconciliation, and begin building the community that will accompany them throughout their preparation.

    Confirmation Small Groups
    • Discipleship & Accompaniment

Teens in Confirmation preparation are placed in Small Groups with other Confirmation candidates where they share a meal together, unpack that week’s Chosen topic and continue preparing together for the Sacrament.

A Small Group is a place where teens are known and loved, where relationships are consistent, and where discipleship actually happens. Teens pray with other Catholics, discuss and wrestle with the faith, receive the witness of peers and adult leaders, are challenged to grow and take their faith more seriously, build meaningful relationships, and become more deeply incorporated into the life of the Church and their Catholic identity.

    Confirmation Retreat
    • Go Deeper

Every candidate participates in a Confirmation retreat, creating intentional space away from the busyness of ordinary life for prayer, quiet, community, encounter, and discernment.

St. Edward offers a weekend retreat in the fall at Camp Kappe, the Archdiocese Youth Retreat Center. More information will be made available at your teen's interview.
    Service
    • A Way Of Life

Candidates are encouraged to make service a genuine part of their Christian life—not to accumulate required hours, but to learn to recognize and respond to opportunities to love and serve others.

Service can be done through the parish, school, another organization, or simply in everyday life—as long as it is genuinely done out of love without expecting anything in return. Candidates are especially encouraged to find ways to serve within the Church and are given multiple service opportunities throughout the year.
    Saints & Sponsors
    • Choose Your Companions

Candidates choose a Catholic sponsor to accompany them and a Confirmation saint whose life offers an example of Christian discipleship.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

    • Who is eligible for Youth Confirmation?
      • Teens who meet the following Archdiocesan requirements and desire to celebrate the Sacrament are eligible to interview for Confirmation.

         1.) Must be baptized Catholic.

2.) Must be at least in 10th grade when going through the preparation process.

3.) Must have actively participated in faith formation (Large Group, Home-Based Formation, or Catholic school) for at least one year immediately before entering the preparation process.

4.) Must actively participate in faith formation (Large Group, Home-Based Formation, or Catholic school) while going through the preparation process.

        Learn more about Formation.
    • Confirmation Candidate Interviews
      • Teens who meet the eligibility requirements are invited to participate in a short candidate interview before registering for Confirmation preparation. The interview isn't a test. It's an opportunity to talk about their faith, their desire for Confirmation, and what they're saying yes to.

Candidates and families will also review the calendar for the year, ask any questions they may have, and complete registration for the preparation process.

Interviews for the 2027-2028 process are tentatively scheduled for May and June of 2027.

The following items are required for a successful interview.
        • Parent or Guardian
        • Baptismal Certificate or Baptism Verification Form if baptized at St. Edward (see below).
        • Candidate Questionnaire (see below).
        • Formation Verification (if accomplished outside of St. Edward)
        • Family Calendar

    • Confirmation Sunday Schedule
      • Confirmation preparation takes place on Sunday evenings after the 5:00 PM Mass, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Because Confirmation preparation is part of the larger life of St. Edward Youth Ministry, candidates are encouraged to take part in the full Sunday experience: Large Group → 5:00 PM Mass → Dinner → Confirmation Small Groups.

Candidates who attend Catholic school or participate in Home-Based Family Faith Formation are not required to attend Large Group.

Large Group fulfills the active faith formation requirement, while the evening Confirmation Small Group provides the candidate’s specific preparation for the Sacrament.

        Learn more about Sundays.
    • Sponsor Requirements
        • Sponsors must be Confirmed, practicing Catholic, at least 16 years old, and not their parent.
        • If married, their marriage must be recognized as valid by the Church.
        • Traditionally, the godparent.
        • Must be designated by the Confirmation candidate.
    • What if my teen missed a year of formation?
      • That’s okay! Teens who have not participated in faith formation during the previous year will first need to complete a year of active formation before beginning Confirmation preparation. They can participate through Large Group, Home-Based Family Faith Formation, or Catholic school, and then interview for Confirmation preparation the following year.

        Learn more about Formation.
    • What if my teen is a Senior with no formation?
      • We recommend waiting until after graduation and then contacting Matt Crews about preparing for Confirmation as an adult. This allows young adults to enter a process designed for adults rather than trying to rush through the Archdiocese's two-year Youth Confirmation pathway.

    • What if I have a concern about the cost?
      • If your family needs financial assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Cost should never prevent a teen from preparing to receive a Sacrament.
    • Is the retreat required?
      • Yes. Every Confirmation candidate is required to participate in a retreat before receiving the Sacrament. The Archdiocese recognizes that the retreat is an important part of preparation, giving candidates dedicated time for prayer, community, reflection, and encounter with Christ outside the busyness of ordinary life.

If an unavoidable conflict arises, please contact Roque Villafranca as soon as possible so we can help you arrange an alternative retreat experience for your teen.

If you are apprehensive about your son or daughter spending the night away from home, consider joining us on retreat as a chaperone! We would love to have you with us.

    • Safe Environment
      • Reminder, all adults (parents and sponsors) participating in the process are highly encouraged to complete the online safe environment training prior to attending formation sessions.

Please use this link (click here) to create an account and attend the digital training.
